The Location of Culture in Contemporary Art
Installation
Ceramics, steel
2024
This installation employs locally sourced clay to examine the interrelationship between space, materials and history, thereby reflecting the region’s heritage. The combination of ceramic and steel elements symbolises both fragility and resilience, thereby highlighting the connections between materials and cultural narratives. The use of local and recycled materials promotes sustainability, while the incorporation of stories of migration and identity represents a reflection on the evolution of cultural identity. In contrast to the commercialisation of art, this installation invites reflection on environmental awareness and the historical impact on contemporary society. Themes include sustainability, identity and human nature.
The clay for this installation was independently crafted from soil gathered in the Haard area of Dudelange, emphasizing a direct connection to the region’s natural landscape. The steell frames were constructed using rods originally produced in Dudelange during Luxembourg’s era of industrial growth in metalworking, grounding the piece in local historical and industrial context.
